Guidance about the Anatomy Examination

Examination Structure

  • The anatomy component of the examination lasts for 75 minutes.
  • The examination comprises 20 cases/images, with five questions about each. The cases are labelled 01 to 20 and the five questions are labelled (a) to (e). Some specimen cases/images, along with their questions and answers, are available.

Examination Equipment

  • The cases/images will be presented digitally using computer workstations. Each workstation will comprise an Apple Mac Mini with a 19" standard aspect ratio monitor and a mouse (right click disabled) but not a keyboard. You will also be provided with a question booklet into which you should write your answers.
  • You will need to bring your own writing equipment.

Examination Software

  • The images will be viewed using Osirix software, which you can download for free for use on Apple computers. The Osirix software will not run on a PC. If you have a PC, you may wish to download Philips PMSDview software, which has similar functionality and can display DICOM images. However, please note that this Philips software will not be used for the examination.
  • The Osirix software provides a simple image viewing window, with the ability to view sequentially the images.
  • You also will be able to move between the 20 cases/images either sequentially or individually via a complete case list.
  • You will be given instructions on the use of the software in a short tutorial immediately prior to the beginning of your examination. Two practice images, labelled 0 and 00, will be provided and you will have some time prior to the start of the examination to familiarise yourself with the software and practice moving between cases/images.
  • Following the two practice images is the start screen, which is labelled 000. You must not proceed beyond this screen until instructed to do so by the invigilators. The next screen is labelled 01 and is the first image of the examination itself. If you view this screen prior to the commencement of the examination you may be disqualified.

During the Examination

  • During the course of the examination, all screen activity on the computer workstations will be monitored and recorded centrally. If suspicious activity is identified on your individual workstation, it will be “locked” remotely and you may be disqualified.
  • In the unlikely event that you experience computer hardware or software failure during the examination, you should alert the invigilators by raising your hand. The invigilators will then move you to a spare workstation.
